True faith does not grow by being passive. When we are engaged in study of scripture, prayer and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, our personal faith life actively grows us into caring, concerned and celebrating Christians. Central has many opportunities in which to gather and grow.

Vacation Bible School

Central Lutheran offers Vacation Bible School each summer. Together we've clowned around at the circus, attended camp with Davey and Goliath, lived as a tribe in Galilee, traveled the rails, and swung through the rain forest in our search for connection with God and each other. The week is always chock full of games, stories, crafts, snacks, fun, new and old friends, songs, acting, and devotion.

Middle School, 6th - 8th grades:
Sundays 4 - 5 pm Middle school youth attend confirmation class with Pastor Jeff, Pastor Lisa and youth of Alaska Native Lutheran, Pastor Carol of St. Mark Lutheran, Pastor Mark of Gloria Dei Lutheran, and Pastor Karen and youth of Lutheran Church of Hope.  The class meets weekly here at Central in Rooms 1-2.  This three-year program of study, service, questioning, fellowship, and fun prepares the youth for high school youth group and adult membership in the church. For current and future youth happenings, click here and plug in or contact our office staff directly.

High School:

High school youth are invited to mark their calendars for June 24 to July 2 as we’re planning a road trip!  Youth from multiple ELCA congregations will come together to travel to Mat-Su, Trapper Creek, Fairbanks and North Pole, Delta Junction, and Valdez as a group to share fellowship, learn from local members of ELCA congregations at each stop, do some short hikes, visit historical and natural points of interest, complete short service projects at some churches and more.  We’re planning to keep costs to $150 per youth by sleeping over at churches and community centers, doing fundraisers to cover gas costs and meals, sharing meals with local congregations, and seeking Thrivent grants and such.   Here's the flyer.

Women's Groups

Central women meet in monthly Bible studies during the school year. You are welcome to join one that fits your schedule best. Most study the Lutheran Woman Today study from the ELCA.

Knitting Group Stitches and Scripture: Stitches and Scripture gathers the second Monday of the month from 7 - 9 pm in Central’s Fellowship Hall, and new folks are welcome. Opportunity knocks for knitters and knitters-to-be:  Would you like to join a small group for a series of four gatherings?  Stitches and Scripture would be offered every two weeks over seven weeks, and includes the creation of a scarf and a dishcloth, a Bible study, and discussion.  Experienced knitters will mentor new knitters, and everyone will learn a bit about how knitting is frequently used in Scripture as a metaphor to describe God’s creative and intimate relationship with us.  If interested, drop a line to the church office.

Central Lutheran Church Women (CLCW)

They attend retreats and large events at the state (Alaska Synodical Women's Organization) and national Lutheran (Women of the ELCA) gatherings, and hold occasional gatherings to bless expectant mothers or simply for fellowship.  Many of these ladies also provide goodies and serve as hostesses for special events including weddings, funerals, and potlucks.

The Men's breakfast and Bible study meets 1st Saturdays of the month at 9 am.
