Grow

True faith does not grow by being passive. When we are engaged in study of scripture, prayer and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, our personal faith life actively grows us into caring, concerned and celebrating Christians. Central has many opportunities in which to gather and grow.

Children & Sunday School

Children of all ages are welcome in our Sanctuary throughout our worship services, and you'll find a kids' table and chairs on the left side of the Sanctuary for quiet activities like coloring.  Kids are also welcome in Rooms 3-4 in our staffed nursery during most Sunday services, and may play there for a short time or the whole service.

In fall 2025, we are starting a whole-family, multi-generational monthly Sunday School potluck dinner on third Sundays at 4:30 pm.  ALL are welcome to come pray, share a meal, sing, hear the Bible story of the month (September 21 will be the creation story from Genesis), and learn from each other as we discuss the reading in our table-groups and complete activities on the theme (can be coloring, crafts, and deep discussion).

Youth

5th - 12th grade youth: Youth group is just in the planning stages right now, check back or read our weekly eNews emails for both local Central youth gatherings and for multi-church opportunities. This age group is also invited to participate in a week of summer camp in Juneau each year.  Our next multi-church event is a retreat weekend in Eagle River at Joy Lutheran, January 16-18, 2026.  (Most school districts have a three-day weekend then with MLK Jr. Day.)

Confirmation class for 6th - 8th grade youth will be Sundays, 4 - 5:30 pm, with snacks, starting October 19 at Christ Our Savior Lutheran for six classes through November 23.  In spring we’ll have another six classes at Gloria Dei and three more after Easter at Hope or Central. These Sunday evening events are led by a group of pastors and volunteers from five local ELCA congregations.

Youth in 8th - 12th grades are invited to travel with our youth group each summer.  2024 was a road trip to Fairbanks for worship, play, study, service, and time in God's creation, and our synod looks forward to replicating that trip in the future.  The ELCA Western States Youth Gathering is held in Thousand Oaks, CA, every three years, next in 2026.  The next ELCA Youth Gathering will be June 28 - July 2, 2027, in Minneapolis.

Bible Studies

Adult Christian Education class "Adult Ed" meets Sundays at 11 am following our worship service.  Starting September 14, we're studying the book of Exodus with Pastor Zach.  Future months will see topics like ELCA Social Statements, community partners, and a new study with Craig Carlson.

Early Risers Study starts September 16 with weekly meetings via zoom at 7 am Tuesdays to study A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers. This book "is a story of kindness and love from one of the foremost practitioners of hopeful Sci-Fi."

Tuesday Noon Text Study meets weekly to look in depth at the coming Sunday Bible texts.  Bring lunch if you'd like; we'll have coffee and hot water ready.

They attend retreats and large events at the state (Alaska Synodical Women's Organization) and national Lutheran (Women of the ELCA) gatherings, and hold occasional gatherings to bless expectant mothers or simply for fellowship.  Many of these ladies also provide goodies and serve as hostesses for special events including weddings, funerals, and potlucks.
