Do you know a student who is looking at college choices?  Central offers a handful of college scholarships to Lutheran colleges and universities including Pacific Lutheran University, Luther College, and St. Olaf.  Some of these opportunities are solely for members of Central Lutheran, some are open to any Alaskan.  Learn more on our website at http://www.centluth.org/scholar.html, and share this opportunity with the young people in your life.

CHURCH NEWS YOU CAN USE

The next congregational sabbatical forum will be on Saturday, February 18, at 11 am.  Join Jonathan Reece and Kristin Hanson as we take a deeper look at faith stories, vocation, and faith in daily life.

Central's book group will be reading Persepolis, a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, the book chosen by the Anchorage Public Library for the 2012 Anchorage Read.  This novel recounts the life story of the author who grew up in Iran and emigrated to EuropeSatrapi has become an unusual ambassador for her native country, a spokeswoman for greater freedom there, and a voice against war and for cross-cultural understanding.  Ten copies of the novel are available in a book group bag from the library.  Please see Marilyn Martinson if you are interested in obtaining one of these copies for the book group discussion which will be in the Cordova room on Monday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. You are always welcome to participate in our discussions.

Lutheran Winter Community Camp is February 10-12, 2012 at Victory Bible Camp’s Conference Center.  Heated, private bedrooms, hot showers, and no big hills to climb to get anywhere!  With Pastor Marty Dasler from Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, we are in for a worshipful and wonderful experience.  Join in for napping, reading, skating, skiing, sledding, tubing, visiting, a one-horse open sleigh, sing-alongs, worship and more.  Learn more or register at www.aklutherancamps.org or call Larry & Dahna Graham at 333-9613.

You’ve heard we are looking for ways to balance our 2012 budget... here’s one opportunity: Would you read your newsletter online, rather than request a paper copy in the mail?  The benefits include full-color photos, clickable links to more information, and even faster delivery.  If you’re willing to save us some paper, printing, and postage costs, please drop a line to centluth@gci.net or call the church office at 277-1622.

Save the date: Central women’s retreat Saturday, April 14

Central Lutheran is partnering with LifeTouch Photography to create our next photo directory of our members.  Get complete information from page 9 of our newsletter at http://www.centluth.org/newsletter.pdf.  LifeTouch will be here at Central on February 11, to take portrait photos of all our members and friends.  Our Church office will be scheduling photo sessions and coordinating the layout.  There is no cost or sitting fee to have your photo taken and included in the directory.  All families photographed will receive one 8x10 copy of the selected photo and a copy of the completed directory.  However, the LifeTouch staff will of course offer you the opportunity to purchase additional portraits if you so choose.

Please pick up your offering envelopes for 2012 from the front hallway.

You may now sign up to sponsor the altar flowers for dates in 2012, just across from the church office.

Faith Stories 2012

Once again during Lent we are inviting you to share your faith story at one of the three worship services each Sunday.  Last year we had so many people volunteer that we even extended the time period for this project beyond Lent --- a wonderful "problem" to have!  This year Pastor Lisa will be on sabbatical during Lent.  Her sabbatical will center on the themes of faith in daily life, faith stories, and vocation, and you are invited to focus on one of these themes as you write your faith story.  We are particularly interested in hearing about your vocation or vocations.  How do you serve God in daily life, in the world beyond the walls of Central?  Is it through your job, in your relationships, in the various roles you take on, sometimes more than one at the same time?  Has your vocation changed?  How has God called you to service?

Our lives change and so do our faith stories.  If you shared last year and would like to share again, we would welcome hearing how you have grown and changed.  If you find yourself in the midst of struggle and uncertainty, that too is part of your faith story.  If you need help getting started, I would be glad to talk with you.

Please contact me if you have questions or to volunteer.  While Pastor Lisa is on sabbatical, we can share in her experience by reflecting on her sabbatical themes here at home.  The Faith Stories Project can help make that happen..

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT THE MINISTRIES OF CENTRAL

Central’s Emergency Cold Weather Shelter for Homeless Families has served and blessed several homeless families, made the news, and inspired more than 30 members and friends of Central to volunteer their time and their talent to serving others.  A few more have asked how to become involved.  Larry Graham will offer volunteer training at both 5:30 pm and 7 pm on Tuesday, February 7.  If you would like to participate or learn more, please call Larry at 333-9613 to let him know you’re coming to training.

Wanted: a name grabber.   A what?  A name grabber.  One who can talk to others over coffee after a service, or make an announcement at their worship service, or make a few phone calls or emails, to fill in the volunteer list for Festival Sundays.   We always like to recognize volunteers who are willing to read the lesson each Sunday or serve as usher, by listing their name in the bulletin; on special Sundays like Easter or Transfiguration Sunday, we especially like to fill in those small volunteer spots for cross bearers, acolytes, and the like.  It’s rarely hard to find volunteers for these ways to participate, but the spots only get filled if someone takes the time to ask a person to serve.  Can you be the person who asks?  Please chat with Sandy Mjolsnes (338-1882) or Kathy in the Church office to learn more.  We even have lists of folks who’ve already indicated they like to serve – so you won’t be cold calling people you don’t know and trying to sell them on a new job ;-)

Central’s Sunday School collects tuna for Lutheran Social Services of Alaska’s food bank during worship in February.  Non-perishable foods of all varieties are always welcome.
